My Skin Care Routine For Sensitive, Combination, Acne Prone Skin

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had the most sensitive, weird skin you can imagine. I’ve been blessed with sensitive, combination, acne prone skin and there’s really not much I can do about it. I’ve tried product after product trying to find something that will help my acne AND doesn’t have incredibly harsh, scented ingredients that will irritate my sensitive skin. I’ve tried every home remedy and store bought product under the sun and I was starting to feel discouraged. Around this time is when my mom started getting into essential oils and lucky for me, they were just the solution I was looking for. In addition to that, about a year ago I decided to give Clinique’s Acne Solutions skin care line a try. I finally found a skin routine that works for my weird skin & I decided to share it for any of my fellow sensitive, combination, acne prone skin friends who might be looking for a solution. The most important part of improving your skin is to be religious with your skin routine. I’m talking literally every morning and every night no matter how tired you are or how much you don’t want to wash your face. I used to haaaaate washing my face but once you make it a solid part of your routine, you won’t be able to continue on with your day or go to bed without completing your routine. For me, it almost feels like going to bed without brushing my teeth...ew.  I want to mention that I do still get the occasional breakout and this isn’t a be all end all to all skin problems, but I’ve definitely noticed improvements in my skin (including acne scars) since I began doing this routine about a year ago. I have linked all of the individual Clinique products for you but I would recommend trying the Clinique Acne Solutions Clear Skin System Starter Kit before splurging on the larger sizes.

Step One: CleanseThis is probably the most obvious and the most important part of your routine. For this step, I like to use the Clinique Acne Solutions Cleansing Foam. Foamy cleansers are my favorite and always make me feel like I’m actually cleaning my face because you know...foam.Who doesn't love a little foamy hand soap or face cleanser?

Step Two: Tone & Exfoliate
A lot of people skip this step because they think it’s pointless but it’s actually one of my favorite steps. Toner may not actually do a lot to help your skin but especially if I’ve been wearing makeup that day, I always feel like it gets the extra little bit of dirt, makeup, and grime off of my face that my cleanser may have missed. For this step, I like to use the Clinique Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion. Despite its name, the consistency is definitely that of a toner and not a lotion.
Step Three: Treat
This is the part when you’ve already cleaned your entire face and are ready to treat the acne itself. What I like about this product is that it’s gentle enough to put over your entire face without drying it out too much. A lot of spot treatments usually result in a smaller spot but cause flaky skin due to the harshness of the product. We’ll get to specific spot treatments later but I find this step really good for a general preventative sweep over the face. I like to use the Clinique Acne Solutions All-Over Clearing Treatment.
Step Four: Moisturize
I find that moisturizing is often one of the most overlooked steps. Especially with the drying aspects of the previous steps, it’s extremely important to find a good moisturizer that works for your skin type. Recently, I started using the Light Moisturizer from the Young Living Art skin care line. What I like about this product is the fact that it’s completely free of any harsh chemicals that might usually irritate my skin. It also goes a long way. One little pump is enough for my entire face.
Step 5: Essential Oils
This is most definitely optional but if you’re willing to spend a little extra on Essential Oils then I would highly recommend going for it. My two favorites for my skin are Tea Tree and Lavender. I really like to use Young Living Essential Oils because of their extremely high quality and effectiveness because they’re some of the purest oils on the market. It’s really important to know exactly what your Essential Oils contain and with this company, you always know you're getting the most ethically produced, purest Essential Oils (Side note: If you’d like to know more about these oils DM me on Twitter or Instagram @itsashleymarie7 or email me at itsashleymarie7@gmail.com). I like to use the Tea Tree oil to treat specific spots on my face directly after using the All-Over Clearing Treatment but before moisturizing. The important thing about using Tea Tree is knowing to only use a little bit. Because these oils are so effective, using too much may cause the skin around the spot to get flaky (ew). One drop is sufficient for a few spots. The other EO I like to use for my skin is Lavender. I pump one spot of moisturizer onto the back of my hand and mix in a drop of lavender to treat my acne scars. Lavender is incredibly healing for the skin and has been a lifesaver for mine.
